Documenting the relationship between human expression and the natural world is central to Jivan West’s practice. Originally trained as a photojournalist, West’s practice oscillates between documentary explorations and self-directed fashion imagery.
West’s project “When The Wind Blows” (2020-Present) portrays the destruction and regrowth after wildfires in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado. The series–inspired by Colorado’s documentary vernacular, previously established by Robert Adams–explores the long-term impact climate crises have on the American West and mourns the loss of spaces of importance from West’s upbringing.
After moving to London in 2021 to pursue a degree in photography from The University of Westminster, West’s practice expanded towards documentary fashion work. West creative directed, produced, and self-published his own magazine, Guns of The West in 2023. The publication is both introspective and observational, focusing on sustainable and equitable practices within art and fashion through the motifs of the American West.
Outside of his long-term projects, West takes on commisions and produces/creative directs his own editorial shoots. West’s select clients include Samsoe, Dazed & Confused Magazine , Dilara Findikoglu and KFC.
In 2025, West will graduate from the University of Westminster and publish the second volume of Guns of The West in June.
